Bluegrass Gospel Music

The following is a list of people that I either know personally, have talked with, or have checked out and believe that their music will be a help and blessing to you. I want to make it clear from the beginning that I am in no way trying to be an agent to any of these folks, or am I endorsing them as folks who think like I do or that I am getting some "cut" from their sales. However, I believe that they have a desire to serve God and are doing it with the talent God has given them and I just want to let others know about it.
I will try to give a short description of the person or group and perhaps describe the album(s) that I might recommend. Please do not email me and tell me something bad about the music. Either you will like it or you won't. I don't expect everyone to like my taste in music just as I probably won't like yours.
Keep in mind that once in a while a group may produce a CD/tape with a secular number on it. While some secular number might be safe to listen to, like "I'm My Own Grandpa", etc., there may be some that are not. I certainly don't endorse all those songs. Then there might be a sacred song that is not always true to doctrine, like "Lord Build Me A Cabin In The Corner Of Gloryland", etc. Again, you will have to use some judgment, that's why God gave you a will and some sense to judge, exercise it!
I've created this site to help saints who like this style of music but are often afraid to buy some of it because they don't know the people or if all the music on the albums (CD's/Tape's) are good.
If you get a blessing from the site or if it has helped you in any way, please let me know. And yes, if you want to complain I'll listen to that as well!!
I now have over 80 entries which have been placed in alphabetical order. Since I will no doubt be adding to this site from time to time, I will indicate "new" additions by using a New Gif graphic sign.
Let me put in a disclaimer here concerning the availability of these groups and their current activities. I really do not have time to check to see that they are all still together and singing, so if you find one it not PLEASE let me know.

*ALL of the following groups can be heard on our Bible believing radio station located here in Lupton, MI. To listen on the Internet click on WMSD

A String And A Prayer
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Electric Bass, Mandolin
Here is another group that I have only had contact with by email. I found their materials on the web and contacted them. They sent me a copy of one of their CD's and I enjoyed it.

It appears that they do not have a website anymore or else they have changed it and I cannot locate it.

New GifAlltop, Travis
Instruments used: Guitar, Mandolin, Violin, Upright Bass
Brother Travis pastor's the Bluegrass Pike Baptist Church in Dansville, KY. As many young people from the south, he had a life in the world of bluegrass entertainment but one day God brought him out of it and now he uses his talents for the Lord. His first album is entitled Come Ye Sinners and I promise you that you will enjoy it as well as be blessed by his singing.

Alzen Family, The
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Violin, Upright Bass, & Whiz Bang!, etc.
As with many of the groups I feature on this page, I found these folks by a search on the net and since it was a "family" I decided to write them and obtain a copy of their CD. These folks are from Wisconsin and do a terrific job at singing and playing. It is always encouraging to find a family serving the Lord with their talents and a father who leads them not just in the physical sense, but also in spiritual matters.

Anderson Family, The
Instruments used: Guitar, Mandolin, Violin, Upright Bass.
I believe these folks are from Texas and you might note that they do not have a banjo in their group, but nonetheless they do a great job. The instrumentation might not be of "professional" quality but it is a blessing to the soul. [I believe that professionalism sometimes destroys the spirit of the music and the testimony of the family.] I have two of their CD's: At Home Again and Think About The Good Things. I am sure that you will be blessed by their music.

I have known Brother Richard Ball for a number of years. This family is very talented and does an excellent job with harmony. I believe you would enjoy any CD they have produced. I have known of this family for a number of year (late 70's) and Bro. Bob had raised some very fine children. The music on these CD's is very simplistic nothing fancy but well done nonetheless. There are five children that take part in their latest CD's and they do a very grand job. They do have one instrumental album now and I understand they are working on another album (vocal) at this time (June 2004).
Albums recommended: There are 5 at present and I recommend all of them

This bluegrass family is from Minnesota and their name is pronounced "Berg-ee." I have two of their CD's Set Free and Trusting You. Both are excellent. Black Creek
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Violin, Upright Bass, etc.
The group Black Creek is from Benson, NC and have been singing together since 2004 (known as Jordon's Journey from 2000-04). My association with them comes from receiving a CD and then emails. I was drawn to them when I read their statement of faith on their website and then listened to cuts from their only CD. (A new one is in the works - spring of 2009). I believe you will be blessed and encourged by the music of these fine folks.

Blessed
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Violin, Upright Bass, etc.
I only have one CD by this group and for the most part it is a very good CD. The CD is entitled Praise God and it appears they might tend to be a little toward a pentacostal type group. That is not a negative comment, just an observation from a couple of numbers from the CD. The song entitled, "Jesus Dying On The Cross" is an excellent song.

Now these folks aren't truly in the "bluegrass" field, but close. (Okay, so we're not playing horseshoes!) They have several tapes available and their daughter Jessica has a CD. (It's all piano and not bluegrass at all.) They are Bible believers and separated. They travel various places to sing, but are very LOCAL church and thus not away on Sundays. [PS: I do not know if they are still traveling or singing as their children have grown up, as children do, but I believe anything you could get of theirs would be a blessing.]

As in most cases I found this group on the internet and have been able to obtain some of their CD's. Here are two titles I believe you would enjoy: The Saving Of A Soul and Going On With Jesus. These folks are genuine country folks and while they play their instruments well I do not detect an air of professionalism. They really seem to enjoy just singing for the Lord.

Edmunds, Gary & Judy
Instruments used: Guitar, Mandolin, Bass.

The group is made up of two brothers, two sisters and a mother and they do a fine job. I have both of their CD's and have enjoyed listening to both of them. They do have some traditional bluegrass music (Instrumental mostly) on the A Touch of Tradition CD but nothing that would be offensive (Danny Boy, Rawhide, etc). I highly recommend this family.

Frye, Bruce & Sammy
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
These two brother have an amazing testimony and you would have to read it to appreciate it. Bruce sought his fame in the Nashville only to discovery that there is no happiness or success outside of the Lord Jesus Christ. Bruce is an evangelist now and sings now for the Lord. He has a CD entitled, "That Was Me" and it is without reservation one of the best I've heard in years. I have never met Wes but in personal but we have corresponded by email. He sent me some CD's for our radio station and after reading the liners and listening to the music I was highly impressed. Often the musicians will write something in the CD liner and I usually can tell from that what they think the most of, their music or God. Wes writes in his CD entitled It Won't Be Long Now!, "SPECIAL THANKS to: Jesus Christ, Pastor Ben, mom, my wife Goldie, my son Jonathon, my Brother and Sister (Fred & Evangeline), and the King James Bible."

Yankees! Yes these folks are from New York, but they sing like they are from Kentucky! [SMILE]. There are 10 children in this family and all (exept the very youngest) play at least two instruments. They range (band) in age 15 to 20 but you would think they are much older. The have their first CD Small Beginnings and it is excellent. They love God and have a testimony to match it . They play many different instruments and play them well. They also have some acappella music. I really don't know how many CD's and tapes they have available but there are at least six of which I'm aware. I promise you that you will NOT be disappointed in their music.

Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, piano, etc.
I have only one CD by this group, entitled No Time Like Today and it is fair. Probably the best song on the CD, in my estimation is "Mercy Seat". There are several songs written by members of the group and one is done only using the piano is a very good. Another song, entitled "Glorybound", written in memory of SSgt Greg Pennington who died in Iraq June 21, 2004, has a little back beat in it, but to some this is acceptable. Over all I enjoyed the CD.

Moyers, Sherry
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, piano, etc.
I came across Sherry's site while "surfering" and after listening to a clip decided I needed to get a copy of the CD. WOW! Her first CD is entitled, In The Garden and it is first class. I especially like #10 By The Mark. I know you will like this CD and will play it a number of times.

Nall, David
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Upright Bass, etc.
Bro. David Nall is not necessarily new to the singing market but is new to the gospel part. He writes most of his own music and does a good job. Mr. Mike McAdoo accompanies him (instrumentally) and he too is not new to the music industry. Mike has played for some of the top artist in country music and bluegrass but he, like David, has had a time of retrospect and they have given their energies to the right kind of music for which I praise the Lord. [PS: For those who do not care for a back beat (drums) be warned that some of their songs do carry a back beat.]

These folks are from out west and have a different sound to some of their music using some Irish instruments. I have several of their CD's and I'll just give the names of two here, but I recommend ALL of them. Within Reach and Keep You Eyes On The Rail have a good selection of music which I am sure you will enjoy.

Primitive Quartet, The
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
I would hardly recommend that you purchase their music if you like the southern and yet bluegrass sound. One song we particularly enjoy here is When The Sun Of Life Goes Down. I'm not sure what the lastest album is but I'm sure it will be a blessing.

Rochesters, The
Instruments used: Dobro, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
This group is a KJB believing group and has excellent harmony. I KNOW that you will enjoy any of the CD's that they have available. The two that I've heard are top notch. They have several recordings at this time. Their latest CD (2006) has some good songs on it. HOWEVER, for those who do not like "drums" in their music, be advised that this CD has at least two songs on it that have drums as part of the background.

Their first CD entitled God Sent An Angel and it is very good. They are a group of young folks (7 of them) just out to glorify the Lord and they do a good job. I believe they have some work to do but they appear willing to do it.

Sitze's Family
Instruments used: Dobro, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
These folks are a bit more "new"grass in their sound but the album I have is enjoyable. For those with a more traditional slant you might find this group a little more than your taste. I believe the group is made up of 4 brothers and a sister. The family name is pronouned "site."

Southern Dogwood
Instruments used: Dobro, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
These folks don't put on any fancy picking and their sound is very basic but very enjoyable. Remember not all bluegrass singers are professonial nor do they want to be so. We have two of their albums and I enjoy them.

Stoney Creek
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass
This group gets their name from the road their church is on in Ypsilanti, Michigan. They have been a real blessing and inspiration to our annual Gospel Hootenanny held here in Lupton, Michigan each June on the 1st Saturday. The man who formed this group is Brother Dan Guenther of the Guenther brothers who plays several instruments. Brother Fite plays guitar his wife sees to the scheduling and Brother and Sister Jeff Rose do most of the vocals. While they do not claim to be professional they do an excellent job singing and playing for the Lord. I highly recommend their albums.

Another group that is different in sound but enjoyable. I only know of the one CD at present but we use it frequently on our radio station. While their mission is NOT to impress people with their music they do a good job with the music.

Tilley, Dale
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
Brother Tilley is a tremendous brother in Christ. He has been to our church to preach and sing and has a tremendous testimony how God took him out of the Nashville rat race to the pulpit. His personal CD's are not really bluegrass in style (just guitar) but he does have one that is which was recorded a number of years ago when he was part of a church bluegrass group at his home church. I highly recommend him both in singing and in preaching.

Trantham Family, The
Instruments used: Mandolin, Guitar, Banjo, Upright Bass.
I located these folks on the web and thoroughly enjoyed their CD entited "How Can I Keep From Singing." The dad, Doug plays the guitar and banjo and does a great job. Emily (15) does a couple solo's and has a good voice. This is a very unique mountain type CD which I believe you would enjoy very much. There are a couple other members of the family that take part in this family group.

True Gospel Echoes
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
These fellows do an excellent job. They are from Kentucky and have a real down home sound. The two CD's that they currently have available sound like the music of Ralph Stanley and such groups. I know you "old timers" will enjoy this group.

New GifTrue Harmony
Instruments used: Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Bass, etc.
This group of men are part of Bible Truth Music which is actually more traditional conservative type music. But this album is truly of a bluegrass nature. There harmony is good and they truly sound bluegrass! The album is entitled Rejoicing In Jesus and I know you will enjoy it and be blessed by the song and music on this album.

Village Singers, The
Instruments used: Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Upright Bass, etc.
For those of you who remember and enjoyed the original Chuck Wagon Gang you will like the Village Singers. The group of four sings some of the old favorites of the past and they do them very well. As with the original Chuck Wagon Gang, the music is secondary to this group. There is not much fancy pickin' but the harmony is beyond description. That is not to say they are not master's on the instruments, it just that they emphasis the words rather than the music.

Ward Family, The
Instruments used: Guitar, Mandolin, Violin, banjo, Upright Bass, etc.
As best I can tell this is a family of seven young ladies and they are "talented"! I believe this is their second album with number three on the way. The album I have is their second one entitled Step On Out and it is vey good. I'm partial to "banjo pickers" and I must say that Miss Sarah does an excellent job. I know you will enjoy this album and will want more.

Wissman Family, The
Instruments used: Guitar, Mandolin, Violin, Upright Bass, piano, and flute.
This family of 14 does a tremendous job in harmony as well as the playing of their instruments. The CD I have (I Am Your Shield) is not all bluegrass but you will enjoy the piano and accappela music as well. Just so you are aware their scripture songs are not from the King James Version. They do sing some music they wrote themselves and it is very good.
